What is Breast Enhancement?
Breast Augmentation is the most common plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States as well as by our Plastic Surgeons in Colorado Springs. Breast augmentation is the plastic surgery procedure that involves the placement of a breast implant to increase the size of the breasts. Women desiring breast augmentation will sometimes have looseness of the breast skin with a saggy appearance. In that scenario, a breast lift can be done in conjunction with the breast implant placement.
Our Plastic Surgeons, Krishna Dash, M.D. and Rupesh Jain, M.D., are highly proficient in the area of plastic surgery of the breast. During your consultation with them in our Plastic Surgery office in Colorado Springs, they will do a comprehensive breast evaluation to see what particular issues concern you and provide an individualized plan to help you improve those areas.
What are Breast Implants?
The implants used for breast augmentation are composed of a shell that is made of a plastic like material called silicone. They can be filled with either saline or a silicone gel. Saline is a salt solution that is the same fluid given intravenously when a person goes to the hospital. Silicone is a gel like material that gives the breast implant a feel and consistency similar to natural breast tissue. Dr. Dash and Dr. Jain will be able to provide you with a more thorough understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of both types of breast implants.
Different Types of Breast Implants
Breast implants come in various different shapes and sizes. The variable that determines how much larger the breast becomes with the implant is the volume of the implant, whether it is saline or silicone. Based on the current size and width of the persons breast, as well as, the amount of tissue and skin present, our plastic surgeons will be able to determine what volume breast implant will fit into your breast. This is a very important aspect of breast augmentation for which our plastic surgeons spend a significant amount time with you assessing. This is usually performed during the sizing appointment once you have decided you would like to have breast augmentation surgery in Colorado Springs.
The surface of the implant can be either smooth or have microscopic projections that give it a slightly rough, textured feeling. In terms of shape, they can be either round or tear-dropped shaping where one half of the implant is slightly flatter than the other half. The flatter portion of the implant would be placed in the breast such that it will sit on the top of the breast and the fuller portion sitting at the bottom of the breast.
Implants also come in different profiles. During the manufacturing process of the implant, they can be made to be either broader or more narrow in width. Given the same amount of volume, a more narrow implant will have more projection giving the breast a more forward projected appearance once placed in the breast. The profile of the implant will also help determine of the overall appearance of the breast, as more narrow implant will give a more forward projected appearance and a broader implant will create a wider, less projected appearance. Our plastic surgeons in our Colorado Springs office will provide you a better understanding of all the variables associated with breast augmentation implants.
Are Silicone Breast Implants Safe?
There has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the use of silicone implants for breast augmentation. In 1992 the Food and Drug Administration put a moratorium on silicone breast implants because of the concern that they were causing medical ailments. After extensive studying and testing of silicone implants in the U.S., the FDA was able to conclude that there is no correlation between silicone breast implants and any medical diseases. As result, they were re-introduced in the U.S. in November of 2006 for use by plastic surgeons in patients 22 years of age and older. Since then, silicone implants have once again become very popular.
Our plastic surgeons in Colorado Springs, Dr. Dash and Dr. Jain, are able to offer the use of both saline and silicone breast implants. However, silicone implants have become the preferred breast implant at the Institute of Plastic Surgery for they have a more natural feel and appearance. Compared with saline implants that can occasionally show wrinkling or rippling, particularly when leaning forward, silicone implants rarely exhibit these issues.
After scheduling your consultation with one of our plastic surgeons, they will review the risks and benefits of each type of implant to help you make an informed decision about which implant is best suited to your desires and needs.
How is Breast Augmentation Performed?
Breast augmentation involves the insertion of a saline or silicone filled breast implant behind the breast tissue or behind the chest wall muscle (pectoralis muscle). Implants can be placed in the desired location via several different incision locations: around the areola; an incision in the armpit; or from an incision near the lower fold of the breast. There are also different shapes, textures, and sizes available in breast implants. Our plastic surgeons will discuss the differences of the various incisions and implant types to help you choose the right implant for you.
