What is Gynecomastia ?

During puberty many hormonal changes take place that can affect the development of male breast tissue. As men mature the breast tissue that develops during adolescences usually resides. For some, the breast tissue does not seem to disappear. This condition where there is enlarged male breasts is called gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is a problem that is quite common but not very often discussed by people. Fundamentally, gynecomastia results from a relative decrease in the amount of testosterone compared with estrogen. Although there can be many reasons for the presence of excessive breast tissue in men, it is often present with no apparent cause.

What are some causes of Gynecomastia?

Who is a good candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery in our Colorado Springs plastic surgery office are men who are active and healthy who have not been able to improve the contour of their chest and breast despite dieting and exercising regularly. It is important to exclude any external factors that can contribute to formation of excess breast tissue in men before deciding on surgery.

Good candidates for breast reduction surgery are mature individuals that are experiencing several of the physical symptoms caused by large breasts. The age of the patient is not a concern with the exception of young woman whose breasts have not completed development. For these patients it is recommended waiting until the breasts are fully grown before proceeding with surgery otherwise they could continue to grow afterwards.

How is Male Breast Reduction Surgery (Gynecomastia Surgery) Performed?

There are several types of tissue present in the breast. The first if the skin envelope. Underneath the skin is fat and glandular breast tissue. The glandular tissue is what produces milk in women after pregnancy whereas in men, it does not. The glandular tissue is much more dense than the surrounding fatty tissue. Underneath all the glandular and fatty tissue is the pectoralis muscle.

Men with large breasts usually have excess fatty tissue but variables amounts of excess glandular tissue. In more severe cases of enlarged male breasts, there can be loose redundant skin of the breast. Men with large breasts will often exercise their chest muscles in an effort to reduce their size, only making the muscle underneath larger.

The surgery for removing the excess breast tissue often involves the use of liposuction to remove the fatty tissue. Our plastic surgeons regularly use ultrasonic liposuction using the VASER liposuction technology to help breakup the dense male breast tissue making the liposuction more effective and precise.

For excessive glandular breast tissue, direct excision of the tissue may be required, since liposuction is usually ineffective in removing it. Only in more severe cases of gynecomastia is excision of the skin required.

What is involved with the Gynecomastia Surgery Consultation?

First contact our Plastic Surgery office in Colorado Springs to schedule a consultation with either Dr. Krishna Dash or Dr. Rupesh Jain. At the time of the consultation, they will perform a complete history and physical exam to assess for any factors that may be contributing to excess male breast tissue.

During the consultation, our plastic surgeons will then determine what will be required to improve the contour and shape of your breasts. They will discuss how and where the procedure is done as well as give you a overview of the recovery process. Dr. Dash and Dr. Jain will also discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery for you.

Where is Male Breast Reduction Surgery performed in Colorado Springs?

Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia at one of our recommended surgery centers in Colorado Springs. After spending some time in the recovery room you will be allowed to go home on the same day as the surgery.

You will have regular follow up appointments with our physicians at our Colorado Springs Plastic Surgery office. They will see you more frequently in the first few weeks after surgery to closely monitor your recovery. After this, your follow up appointments will become less frequent.

What are the scars from Male Breast Reduction Surgery (Gynecomastia Surgery)?

When there is dense glandular breast tissue present, an incision at the bottom half of the areola (pigmented portion of skin around the nipple) is utilized to allow for removal. This is not necessary in all cases. However, liposuction is performed in almost all case of gynecomastia surgery since there is excessive fatty tissue present in most cases. This is done by making a small incision about 1/4 of an inch in size on the lower, outer aspect of each breast.

The scars that result from these incisions are usually inconspicuous in most patients. If they are slightly more noticeable, our surgeons use various methods to help improve the scars. Most patients find the scars more than acceptable given the results from surgery.

What is the recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery?

Patients will require a few weeks after surgery to recover. During this time our plastic surgeons in Colorado Springs will ask you to wear a compression garment that will serve to provide a smoother contour to your chest when healing. It also helps compress some of the swelling in the breast and decrease the likelihood of fluid accumulation.

After surgery, our doctors will see you regularly in our Colorado Springs plastic surgery office to monitor you closely. They will give you instructions on how to manage your incisions as well as what activities are allowable. They will be available throughout your recovery process to ensure your safe recovery.

Are drain tubes required for my Gynecomastia Surgery?

A frequently asked question during the male breast reduction surgery consultation is whether drain tubes will be required. These drains tubes are used to prevent fluid from accumulating in the breast following surgery. The need for the use of drain tubes is usually based on the amount of tissue that will be removed during surgery. Dr. Dash and Dr. Jain will be better able to determine the need for drain tube after they exam you during the consultation.
