Forehead and Brow Lift

The forehead area can often be one of the first areas of the face to dramatically show the signs of aging. You may notice that skin laxity has caused the brow to droop, making you look perpetually worried, angry or tired. In some cases, the sagging becomes significant enough to cause hooding of the upper eyelid, which can even interfere with your line of vision. At the same time, deep furrows can form across the forehead and between the eyebrows to exacerbate the aged appearance. A brow lift reverses all of these changes, refreshing your appearance to make you look more awake and youthful.

Brow Lift Overview

A brow lift surgically lifts the forehead area, smoothing away telltale lines and creases in the process. This procedure may be recommended when injectable treatments and other non-surgical procedures are no longer producing desired results due to the advancing of the aging process. A brow lift will address any or all of the following concerns:

  • Smooth away horizontal creases that appear across the forehead
  • Reduce parallel vertical lines that form between the eyebrows
  • Restore the eyebrows to a more youthful position on the face
  • Reverse hooding over the upper eyelids
  • Eliminate a chronically tired, angry or sad appearance

In some cases, a brow lift alone will produce your full results. Other times, our surgeons may recommend combining the brow lift with eyelid surgery, a facelift or non-surgical rejuvenation procedures to obtain an even more dramatic outcome.

Brow Lift Options

At Institute of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Jain will tailor your brow lift to the level of correction you need and your desired results. Options in a brow lift include:

Traditional Brow Lift
The traditional technique is usually recommended for patients that require a significant amount of correction. This procedure involves a long incision, known as a coronal incision, inside the hairline where visible scarring will be minimal. Skin is lifted away so that Dr. Jain can reposition tissue to create a natural look. Muscle is loosened to smooth away horizontal wrinkles over an extended period of time, while excess skin is removed to produce a smoother facial contour.

Endoscopic Brow Lift
Endoscopic techniques can often be used when the level of correction needed is not as extensive. The method requires a special tool called an endoscope, which is equipped with a tiny camera that allows the surgeon to see the surgical area without completely exposing it through a longer incision. Tiny incisions are made to allow for access of the endoscope and the special tools used to achieve the full desired adjustments. The advantages of an endoscopic procedure include smaller incisions, which mean less scarring, a more comfortable procedure and a shorter recovery process in most cases.

Are You a Candidate?

Brow lifts are generally right for men and women that are in good health, do not smoke, and have significant signs of aging they would like to address in the upper face area. Because smoking directly interferes with the body’s ability to heal after surgery, you will be asked to stop smoking many weeks before and after your operation. It is also important to have a thorough understanding of how the procedure works and what you can expect from your outcome. Dr. Jain will spend time with you at your consultation to explain your surgery and answer all of your questions so you are prepared for what is to come.

During Your Procedure

Dr. Jain typically performs brow lifts under general anesthesia, although endoscopic procedures can sometimes be done using local anesthesia with sedation. Either way, you will be asleep and comfortable throughout your procedure. This surgery usually takes no more than a couple of hours to complete, although the time may be longer if you are having this procedure in conjunction with another. Patients are usually able to go home within a few hours after their brow lift surgery.

After Your Procedure

Bruising and swelling are common after brow lift surgery and you will be advised to take oral medication and use ice packs to keep you comfortable in the first days of your recovery. You should be back to light activities within one week; sooner if your procedure was endoscopic. Most patients feel ready to hit the social scene after about two weeks, when most of the swelling has subsided.

Brow Lift Benefits

The results of your brow lift will likely last many years as long as you protect your skin from the sun and use high quality skin care products after your surgery. Your face will look refreshed and more youthful, and drooping around the eyelids will be effectively eliminated. This procedure will rejuvenate your appearance and increase your self-confidence in every aspect of your life.

With a variety of benefits and a profound impact on your youthful appearance, a brow lift is a popular way to refresh your look with results that are long-lasting.
