Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) in Colorado Springs
Signs of aging can creep into the eye area early since the delicate skin around the eyes is particularly vulnerable to damage. The eyelids can start to droop and sag, while puffiness and bags develop underneath the eyes. When the damage becomes extensive, an eyelid lift can help to restore your youthful appearance and even improve your line of vision if upper lid drooping becomes severe. In a single, outpatient procedure, you can significantly turn back the clock, refresh your look and boost your self-confidence.
Eyelid Lift Overview
An eyelid lift or blepharoplasty specifically focuses on restoring lift and firmness to the eyelids when the aging process has taken its toll. This procedure can be tailored to your unique needs, with the ability to treat the upper lids, lower lids or both eyelids at the same time. Surgery is often recommended once non-surgical treatments no longer have the desired effect or when you decide you are ready for a more long-term solution to your aging symptoms. An eyelid lift may address the following issues:
- Drooping upper lids that can sag to the point of interfering with your line of vision
- Upper eyelids that have dropped and make you look perpetually sleepy or sad
- Deep folds on the upper lids that make it difficult to apply makeup
- Bags or puffiness underneath the eyes
- A drooping lower lid that reveals the white of the eye under the iris
- Loose skin and fine lines underneath the eye
An eyelid lift is frequently performed alone, offering excellent results for patients primarily concerned about aging around the eyes. However, it can also be combined with a brow lift or facelift to enhance the rejuvenation effects further. Dr. Jain will help you determine which procedure or collection of treatments will provide you with the best possible results.
Eyelid Lift Options
With different choices available for an eyelid lift, Dr. Jain will customize your procedure to your precise needs. Options include:
Upper Eyelid Lift
An upper eyelid lift involves incisions in the natural crease of the lid to minimize visible scarring after surgery. Through the incision, Dr. Jain will remove small pockets of fat and excess skin to create a smoother contour to the eyelid. Drooping will be reversed so that the overall appearance of the eye is more awake and refreshed.
Lower Eyelid Lift
When the lower lid is treated, incisions are usually placed within the lash line or inside the lid to hide post-operative scarring. Excess skin and tissue are removed so that fine lines are smoothed away, and puffiness underneath the eye is eliminated.
Upper and Lower Eyelid Lift
When appropriate, these procedures can be performed simultaneously in a single procedure, so that you can enjoy full results with just one session under anesthesia and one recovery process. Patients do not typically find the healing to be any more painful or lengthier when both lids are addressed at the same time.
Are You a Candidate?
An eyelid lift is an acceptable procedure for both men and women concerned about the signs of aging around the eyes. Results tend to be best for non-smoking patients in relatively good health that will give themselves ample healing time after surgery. You should have realistic expectations of what this procedure will do for you and be prepared to protect your eyes from direct sun exposure after your surgery to ensure UV rays do not damage some of the positive effects of your eyelid lift.
Patients of Asian ancestry can also benefit from an eyelid lift at any age. In this case, the procedure is used to create an upper eyelid crease, while preserving the integrity of the Asian ethnicity.
During Your Procedure
Dr. Jain typically performs an eyelid lift under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Some patients may be able to have the surgery under local anesthesia with sedation if general anesthesia is a concern for any reason. Eyelid surgery usually takes a couple of hours to complete, and you will spend some time under observation in our recovery area before heading home. If you have more than one procedure, the time may be somewhat extended to accommodate both treatments.
After Your Procedure
Many of our patients are pleasantly surprised at how little pain they experience after an eyelid lift. You will be given a prescription for oral pain medication to take during the first few days of the recovery process and you will be instructed on the use of ice packs to minimize swelling after surgery. Patients are usually able to return to regular activities within 1-2 weeks, although strenuous exercise will be restricted longer to give the eyes sufficient time to heal fully.
Eyelid Lift Benefits
Your results from your eyelid lift will be long-lasting as long as you care for the skin around your eyes properly after surgery. This means protecting the eyes from direct sunlight and using high-quality skin care formulations designed to keep the delicate skin around the eyes in top condition. Over time, you may begin to see aging signs creeping in once again, which may necessitate an additional treatment or surgery to maintain your more youthful appearance.
An eyelid lift offers a dramatic way to refresh your appearance, with results that typically last for many years. If you would like to discuss this surgery further with Dr. Jain, contact the Institute of Plastic Surgery today at 719-535-9990 to schedule your appointment.
