Breast Reduction

What is Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)?

Women with large breasts often experience physical strain from carrying the excess weight of their breasts. This can result in neck pain, back pain, headaches, rashes and infection underneath the breasts, difficulty breathing and other musculoskeletal problems. Excessively large breasts, in addition to the physical problems, can make a woman feel embarrassed and self-conscious.

The purpose of Breast reduction surgery is to decrease the size of the breast and help mitigate the discomfort associated with the excess weight. A secondary result from the surgery is that women will also get a breast lift at the same time. Unlike breast lift, breast reduction is a usually considered a medical necessary procedure that is covered by most insurance companies.

Who is a good candidate for Breast Reduction?

The weight of the breasts can cause a multitude of physical problems. Along with the physical complaints, overly large breasts can often create psychological distress and social embarrassment. Patients often describe the feeling of being overly self-conscious.

Good candidates for breast reduction surgery are mature individuals that are experiencing several of the physical symptoms caused by large breasts. The age of the patient is not a concern with the exception of young woman whose breasts have not completed development. For these patients it is recommended waiting until the breasts are fully grown before proceeding with surgery otherwise they could continue to grow afterwards.

What are the different Breast Reduction Techniques?

There are several different techniques that are available to do reduce the size of ones breast. The basic principles all breast reduction involve:

  • Removal of breast tissue and volume.
  • Removal of excess skin.
  • Tightening of the skin envelope.
  • Raising of the nipple and areola to higher position.

The traditional breast reduction involves making several incisions along the lower aspect of the breast to allow removal of the excess breast tissue. After this, the nipple is repositioned to a higher location on the breast. The majority of the excess skin at the lower breast region is removed and tightened. Once complete, there is an incision around the areola, vertical one between the areola and the fold of the breast and an incision along the length of the fold. This often referred to as the “anchor” scar since it appear to be in the shape of an anchor.

There is also vertical breast reduction which is similar in concept with the main difference being the lack of an incision along the fold of the breast. This is usually reserved for patients that are not extremely large. During your consultation with one of plastic surgeon in our Colorado Springs office, Dr. Krishna Dash and Dr. Rupesh Jain, they will assess what type of breast reduction would be best suited for your needs.
